Writing for Kids in Today's Children's Market
By Cindy Kenney
Do you have a dream to write children's books? I did, toThere were many times I never thought I would see that dream realized. But a great deal of work, persistence, and the ability to wait on God's timing was the key to making my dreams come true.
Not much has changed since I was first published over 15 years ago. It still takes work, persistence and patience. But knowing what I do now, there are a few things I would recommend for writers who are trying to break into the market or expand their careers.
- Write what you know and don't try to be good at everything. Choose just one project at a time and polish it until it's perfect. Yes, that means it will take you a great deal of time - but if you want to be published, it will be worth it.
- Attend writer's conferences. This is probably the single best opportunity to learn from the experts and actually meet with an editor. In addition, you will actually get a chance to have your manuscript seen and/or critiqued without having to wait up to 6 months time. The key is to research each conference and choose the ones that will benefit you the most. If there isn't going to be anyone teaching on the topics you want to hear - or an editor or agent you want to meet with, then don't choose that conference. Sure, attending conferences will cost you some time and money - but just think of the huge savings of time (which is money) you will save in what you learn and the ability to have your manuscript seen.
- Find small entryways into the market. You may want to publish a picture book or chapter book, but it is difficult to do. If you can query an editor and have some creditials to your name, you will have a better chance at being looked at. Try writing magazine articles (or even a craft, game, or short story for a magazine). Another good entry is through writing curriculum or gettiing something published online.
- Know how to write a good query letter. This can be tough for many writers. FYI - you can hire this out if it's really not something that's up your alley. It's not that expensive and if you go with a respected letter writer, you're apt to get an excellent proposal written.
- Know the age group you are writing for, the words they can handle, and how many words are expected in the genre you are submitting to. This is key. If you don't know and understand kids, you're going to have some big problems to overcome! Get inside their heads. Spend time with them (and not just your own kids or a family member's). Sit and observe for a few days at school. Watch how kids interact at the park or in the library or book store.
Keep in mind that most manuscripts are rejected because they aren't really that good. The characters are too ordinary or cutesie, the endings are predictable or the plot is contrived or not put together well. Many writers don't take the time to get a writer's market guide and research the best publishers to send their manuscript to.
PRACTICE - PRACTICE - PRACTICE! Writing takes time. It requires reading and researching the kinds of material you want to write. And it also takes a tremendous effort to get your manuscript completed just right. If you aren't willing to put in the time, just enjoy writing as a hobby. But if you're in this for the long haul - go for the gold and perfect what you're doing. You have the chance to touch many young lives if you do!
